Before you join

Who is my DNO, and how do I find out?

Your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) is the company responsible for maintaining the electricity network in your local area. They’re the ones who issue things like Export MPANs and handle network approvals for installations like solar panels.

If you’re not sure who your DNO is, you can quickly find out by entering your postcode here:
https://www.energynetworks.org/customers/find-my-network-operator

Can I join the scheme if I don’t have an Export MPAN? How can I obtain one?

Yes, you can still join without an Export MPAN, but you may only receive 50–70% of the potential benefits

To access the full value, we recommend having an Export MPAN. Here’s how it works:

  • The DNO (Distribution Network Operator) issues the Export MPAN after approving your solar installation (typically via a G98/G99 form that your installer would have submitted if you expressed interest to export).
  • Your energy supplier registers that MPAN so your export meter can be used for payments, for example, under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) or Feed-in Tariff (FiT).

What to do:

  1. Check your FiT or SEG documents. If you’re already registered, you may already have an Export MPAN.
  1. If not, confirm your DNO was notified of your solar install (you may have just opted for self-consumption, not to export to the grid).
  1. Once approved, the DNO issues the Export MPAN.
  1. Once issued, contact your energy supplier to register it.

Your installer or energy supplier can help if you’re unsure at any step.

Are there any disadvantages or limitations I should be aware of when joining the scheme?

This is a low-risk trial with no upfront cost, and your battery usage will still prioritise your home energy needs.

However, during certain events, we may temporarily override your usual battery schedule. These events are limited in duration and frequency, and we’ll always aim to take actions that are net-positive for your overall energy usage and savings.

You can also leave the scheme at any time, with no penalty.

What happens if I decide to leave the scheme later on?

You’re free to leave the trial at any time — there are no penalties or fees.

However, if you choose to leave, you won’t receive earnings or benefits from any upcoming quarters, including future value as we introduce new revenue streams and expand into additional markets.

If you do leave, your system will simply return to its normal operation without any impact on your existing tariff or setup.

Money and savings

Will joining this scheme affect my existing Feed-in Tariff (FiT) or energy export arrangement?

No, for the initial markets we’re entering, your FiT tariff won’t be affected.

As we explore deeper trading opportunities, we will clarify exactly how far we can go without impacting your FiT.

For the Capacity Market, your battery will only be used three times per year, so any effect is minimal.

When it comes to wholesale trading, we carefully factor in your energy tariff to strike the right balance, ensuring you keep your local savings while still earning value from the wider electricity markets.

What kind of value or earnings can I expect from taking part in the scheme?

This first year is a trial period, where we’ll be testing how different services can be combined in real life.

Our early projections suggest you could earn at least a few hundred pounds over the year, on top of what you already save through your tariff and solar self-consumption.

Because the wholesale market can vary, the actual earnings might be higher or lower, which is why we give you a £50 digital gift card (via Gift4All) and guarantee that we’ll only take net-positive actions to improve your overall optimisation.

How and when will I be paid for the battery services provided?

You’ll receive earnings from the battery services on a quarterly basis, along with a breakdown of how the value was generated.

We’ll also provide regular updates and insights into your battery’s performance and earnings potential. And remember — you’ll receive a £50 digital gift card (via Gift4All) just for joining the trial.

How it works

How many times and how much would my battery be used, and will I still have control or priority over its operation?

To begin with, your battery will take part in the Capacity Market, where it will be used only three times a year, for 30 minutes each time.

Later in the year, we’ll introduce participation in other markets (from autumn), where we may control your battery for short periods of 0.5 to 2 hours at a time.

Outside of these brief events, your battery will continue to follow the schedule you’ve already set, so you keep priority and control over how your system runs day to day.

What types of markets or services will my battery be participating in, and when?

We’ll start by bidding your battery into the Capacity Market, followed by the wholesale energy markets, specifically, the day-ahead and intra-day markets, during the upcoming autumn and winter seasons. These are the markets where we expect to unlock the most value.

What kind of notifications or alerts will I receive before my battery is used?

For the Capacity Market, there will only be three events throughout the year. We’ll provide more information once those dates are confirmed.

For wholesale and other markets, we expect short, automated charging and discharging actions on most days (see Q7). These actions are based on your overall optimisation.

While you won’t receive individual alerts for each event, you will receive notifications from Powervault via push-messages.
